Thanthirimale is one of the Sri lankans oldest settltments.The area was known as Thiwanka Bamunugama during the reign of KIng Devanampiyatissa.
When the sacred Bo Tree Sapling was taken to Anuradapura the entourage spent one night at this historic settlement.The Thanthirimale Monastry is renowned for having one of the eight sacred Bo Tree saplings from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
The Monastry was rediscovered in 1960 after it was abandoned during repeated Indian invasions during the Anuradhapura period.
In 1983 the Monastry and the adjoining villages were attacked by the LTTE ..However the whole area is now under the protection of the SRI LANKA ARMY.
WE ARE INDEBTED TO THESE BRAVE SOLDIERS FOR PROTECTING THIS MONASTRY...
